Every week of the final stretch the same question echoes in study lounges: “What do I need on the final?” Most students guess. Some pray. This guide does the actual reverse-weighted arithmetic so the answer stops being a feeling and becomes one precise, defensible number.
The One Formula That Ends the Guessing
A weighted grade works forward like this: each category’s weight times your percentage in it, all added together. Flip it around and you can solve the missing final directly.
Needed final % = (target % − earned weight-points) ÷ (final weight ÷ 100)
Spend one minute gathering two inputs and the final answers itself: 1) your target percentage and 2) the weighted points you have already locked in from graded categories.
Worked Example: A 35% Final
Say your course is Homework 20%, Quizzes 20%, Midterm 25%, Final 35% — and you have finished everything except the final.
- Homework 20% weight, you earned 90% → 20 × 0.90 = 18 points
- Quizzes 20% weight, you earned 75% → 20 × 0.75 = 15 points
- Midterm 25% weight, you earned 80% → 25 × 0.80 = 20 points
- Earned so far = 18 + 15 + 20 = 53 weight-points
Want an A (say 90%): (90 − 53) ÷ 0.35 = 37 ÷ 0.35 = 105.7%. That is mathematically impossible — good to know before you burn a week cramming. Chasing a solid B (80%): (80 − 53) ÷ 0.35 = 27 ÷ 0.35 = 77.1%. A pass (60%): (60 − 53) ÷ 0.35 = 7 ÷ 0.35 = 20%, which is almost already banked.
Notice how the answer shifts violently across targets. The same course demands 105.7%, 77.1%, or 20% depending only on the letter you actually want. Guessing the difference is how students either panic unnecessarily or blow an easily-won A.
Why Your Current Percentage Is Not the Whole Story
Many students read their canvas portal percentage and assume the final is fixed on top of it. It is not. The portal percentage is usually renormalized over completed work. Our formula deliberately uses raw earned points against the final’s real weight, which is the only honest way to see the remaining gap. Skip this and you will routinely be 5–10 points off.
Check the Denominator First
Three traps make the math lie:
- Final not 35%. Some courses weight the final at 50% or 10%. Use your syllabus weight in the denominator, never 35% by default.
- Dropped or curved scores. If a low quiz is dropped after the fact, your earned points jump and the needed score drops.
- Pass/fail boundaries. A D is often a very low bar; if you only need a pass, the required score can be surprisingly attainable.
You can stop doing this by hand. Type your categories and weights into the Gradlivo grade calculator, leave the final blank, set your target, and the exact needed score appears instantly. Let the tool do the arithmetic the final night, not you.
